After over 20 weeks of predictions, picks, and Power Rankings encompassing the 2023-24 NFL season, it all comes down to this: Super Bowl 58. The defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, will look to go back-to-back, and attempt to yield the same result as Super Bowl 54: a win over the San Francisco 49ers. For the 49ers, this is their first time back since their fourth quarter collapse in Super Bowl 54, as the franchise look for its sixth Super Bowl title.
This matchup is way more than Patrick Mahomes vs. Brock Purdy, way more than the Taylor Swift-sideshow, and way bigger than the Las Vegas stage its set on: Super Bowl 58 pits the league’s two best teams and 106 football players for the right to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl 53: Predicted the Los Angeles Rams would beat the New England Patriots 36-30 in overtime. Was wrong on the Rams, and the game was ultimately a low-scoring snooze with New England winning 13-3.
Super Bowl 54: Predicted the Kansas City Chiefs would overcome the San Francisco 49ers 37-30, and in reality the Chiefs won 31-20 after a fourth quarter comeback.
Super Bowl 55: Predicted an epic shootout and last-minute game-winning drive from Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, projecting a 37-36 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The real outcome was much less exciting, with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers prevailing 31-9.
Super Bowl 56: Predicted the Los Angeles Rams would beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-22, and reality was pretty close, a 23-20 Rams win.
Super Bowl 57: Predicted the Kansas City Chiefs would win 28-21, and in reality, the Chiefs topped Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in a thriller.

On paper, the San Francisco 49ers field a better football team from top to bottom. From offensive line and defensive line, to secondary and skill players, to quarterback and linebacking corps, San Francisco’s roster has a little bit of everything, sprinkled with All-Star talent.
The Kansas City Chiefs have no slouch of a roster either, but San Francisco fielded the most impressive team this year: hands down. But at the game’s most important position, the Chiefs can make up for any shortcomings through their human cheat code: Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is a dominant force in the regular season: but in the postseason? If your name isn’t Tom Brady (or Joe Burrow, that one time) chances are, you’re not sending Mahomes and the Chiefs packing.
“On paper,” we call back to, the 49ers still have a slight edge even when considering the Mahomes-factor: making the Chiefs rare 1.0-point underdogs in Super Bowl 58.
But no one really sees the Chiefs as underdogs here. Despite his opposing quarterback, Brock Purdy, having weapons like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle at his disposal, it might not matter. Marquez Valdes-Scantling could make a game-sealing catch, as he did against the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. Isiah Pacheco could pick up a killer first down in crunch time. Besides megastar Travis Kelce (I mean, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend), Mahomes doesn’t really have a star-studded offensive arsenal.
And yet here he is, four quarters of football away from back-to-back championships. This year’s Chiefs aren’t nearly as good as last year’s version, in my opinion, and once again, it might not matter.
If Purdy and the 49ers don’t play a near flawless game, Mahomes and the Chiefs will likely win Super Bowl 58 in what could look like a routine victory. For the 49ers, it’s the Super Bowl. For Mahomes and the Chiefs… it may feel like just another game. Due to that level of comfort and familiarity, along with Mahomes’ 14-3 career postseason record, it’s hard to pick against the Chiefs. Would the most well-rounded team in the league securing victory on Sunday surprise me? Not at all: but at this point in time, picking against the Chiefs is simply asking for trouble.
