Week 13 of the 2023-24 NFL Season delivered some explosive results, some division-race-defining battles, and a couple of surprises as well.
The headline of Week 13 was certainly the San Francisco 49ers beating, nay, dominating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. After Philadelphia’s defense held Brock Purdy and company scoreless in the first quarter, San Francisco went on to score 14 points in each of the final three quarters: earning a 42-19 win in a rematch of the 2022-23 NFC Championship Game. The Eagles still hold a better record at 10-2 for now, but the 49ers just created a very realistic chance of stealing back the #1 seed in the NFC if they can finish the season with a better record or the same record as Philadelphia.
In an important AFC clash for playoff positioning, C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans outlasted the Denver Broncos 22-17 despite a late comeback attempt from Russell Wilson’s offense. The Texans improve to 7-5, and are in prime position to control their own destiny for a playoff spot down the stretch.
The Indianapolis Colts also improved to 7-5, defeating the Tennessee Titans in overtime to keep pace in the race for an AFC playoff spot as well.
Throw in the 6-6 Buffalo Bills to the mix, and you’ve got six teams battling for three wildcard spots, which should be exciting to watch over the season’s final five weeks.
UPDATE 12/5: And after an improbable overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars by Jake Browning and the Cincinnati Bengals, the AFC race is even hazier. Cincinnati re-enters the playoff hunt at 6-6, and at 8-4, the Jaguars are just one game ahead of both the Colts and Texans in the AFC South.
The NFC wildcard race also got extremely muddled in Week 13, which is great for competition down the stretch as well.
The NFC playoff race got a lot more hectic in Week 13
The 6-6 Seahawks, 6-6 Falcons, 6-6 Packers, 6-6 Rams, 6-6 Vikings, 5-7 Buccaneers, and 5-7 Saints create a mess in the middle of the conference, and they’ll all battle for 3 playoff spots: the NFC South 👑, and 2 WC spots
In addition to the Los Angeles Rams battling back to 6-6, Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers (thought to be left for dead earlier this season) worked their way back to an even 6-6 record as well, stunning Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs with a 27-19 win at Lambeau Field to defend their home turf on Sunday Night Football.
