Week 4 of the 2023-24 NFL season brought pivotal results: some quite surprising, some expected, and some affirming whether a team is looking good, bad, or mediocre through four out of seventeen games of play.
The San Francisco 49ers continue to be the cream of the crop, topping my list for the fourth straight week after taking care of business 35-16 at home against the Cardinals.
However, a major shakeup took place as the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills swapped #2 and #5 spots following Buffalo’s blowout 48-20 win in Week 4. Both Buffalo and Miami won big in Week 3, but it seemed the Bills might be one of these teams that smothers bad opponents, yet can’t always keep up with the best of the best. Sunday’s win squashed those rumors, with the Bills making a huge statement and tying the Dolphins in the AFC East race.
The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-0, but keep playing down to their opponents, this week allowing the Washington Commanders to take them in to overtime. Similarly, the 3-1 Kansas City Chiefs have only dominated in one of their three wins, with Zach Wilson and the New York Jets giving the Chiefs a serious run for their money on Sunday Night Football.
After about the #10 spot, things start to get a little hazy, with a slew of 2-2 teams (and maybe a couple 1-3 teams with promise) all bunched together. Many of these teams are 2-2 with some up-and-down play so far, and are hard to peg long-term. Teams like this include the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Jacksonville Jaguars, among others. Four weeks is a decent sample size, but some of these teams are still a mystery at the season’s rough quarter-way point.
