The first week of 2023-24 NFL action is in the books, and it’s time to overreact accordingly.
Just kidding, of course. It’s natural to overreact to Week 1 results, as they are the only real football results we have right now At the same time, one game is an extremely small sample size, and many of these teams have built up pedigree over the years: one loss doesn’t change the outlook of a team with a talented roster, not yet at least.
Still, some Week 1 results shifted my personal perspectives on some teams. The New York Giants fell 15 spots after failing to show up in a 40-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns, on the other hand, rose 11 spots after proving me wrong and dominating Joe Burrow and the Bengals in a 24-3 victory.
Other movers include Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, up eight spots after an upset win over the Minnesota Vikings, and the Green Bay Packers, who rose 11 spots after Jordan Love led a 38-20 win over Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears.
The San Francisco 49ers top the list this week, with a 30-7 dominant win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, coupled with the defending champs losing on opening nght, pus the Philadelphia Eagles looking less than 100%. The 49ers have an absolutely loaded roster, and Brock Purdy just keeps winning.
Lastly, note that the New York Jets don’t take a tumble, despite losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the season. Zach Wilson, Robert Saleh, and the Jets found a way to overcome adversity in Week 1 and walk away with a win, and there’s plenty of reasons to like this roster outside the quarterback position. Don’t count the Jets out just yet.
