Good morning from Colorado: where near summer-like conditions have crept back in to colder temperatures on this Saturday, March 29, 2025.
With the Colorado Rockies kicking off their season yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays, nearly all of Colorado’s major league teams are now active except for the NFL’s Denver Broncos: and even they are in an interesting part of the year as free agency continues and the 2025 NFL Draft looms.
From the Rockies to Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Mammoth, and Colorado Rapids, there’s plenty going on in the world of Colorado sports: let’s dive in.

For better or worse, the Colorado Rockies had their moment to shine yesterday on their 2025 MLB Opening Day. The slightly new-look Rockies took an early 2-0 lead against Ryan Pepiot and the Tampa Bay Rays, and Kyle Freeland turned in an excellent start, striking out seven over six scoreless innings, on his franchise-record fourth Opening Day start for Colorado.
But the Rockies lost 3-2, with Rays rookie outfielder Kameron Misner hitting a walk-off solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, off of Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik.
Misner became the first player in MLB history to record their first hit as a walk-off home run.
The Rockies fall to 0-1 and play the Rays again at 2:10 PM MT/4:10 PM ET. Tampa Bay is playing their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field this season, after Tropicana Field was badly damaged last year by a hurricane.

After surviving a scare against a Milwaukee Bucks team that was missing both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard (a trend that the Nuggets really need to buck as playoff time approaches), the Denver Nuggets took care of business handily against the Utah Jazz at Ball Arena on Friday night, winning 129-93.
Notably, Nikola Jokic (27 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists) nailed a nothing-but-net three-quarter court heave at the halftime buzzer, sending the crowd in to a frenzy.
The Nuggets remain third in the Western Conference behind the Houston Rockets, and face a big matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 1 at Ball Arena. The Timberwolves have appeared to have the Nuggets’ number since last postseason, and loom as a potential first round opponent, so defeating them could be huge for Denver’s confidence heading in to the postseason.

The University of Colorado has extended program-transforming head coach Deion Sanders with a five-year, $54 million contract extension, putting rumors to rest (at least temporarily) that Sanders was pinning for an NFL job as early as 2025. Despite Shadeur Sanders entering the NFL Draft, Deion Sanders still plans to be part of the community he built in Boulder, Colorado for years to come.

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 at Ball Arena on Thursday night, improving to 11-0-0 at home since making a flurry of trades, headlined by the acquisition of Martin Necas.
While Colorado is 8-1-1 overall in their last ten games, time is still running out to catch the Dallas Stars, who have a five point lead in the standings despite playing one less game than the Avalanche so far.
The Avalanche host the St. Louis Blues today at 2:30PM MT.

The Colorado Rapids (2-2-1) are playing their sixth match of the season this afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. The Rapids host an upstart 3-1-1 Charlotte FC squad, who are tied for the second-most points in the league at 10 so far, behind only the Philadelphia Union and Vancouver Whitecaps.
Zack Steffen will return in goal for the Rapids after missing the last home match, as he was called up the United States Men’s National Team at the time.
That’s about all the time I have for today, on my first-ever Colorado Sports Roundup. If i had a little more time, I would have dove in to some Denver Broncos news and rumors as well as Travis Hunter and Shadeur Sanders draft news, but hopefully this becomes a regular column and every team can get their chance to shine.
