Rematches in the Super Bowl can be few and far behind in the NFL, but the Kansas City Chiefs are starting to rack them up now.
A year after facing, and defeating, the San Francisco 49ers for the second time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the two-time defending champions drew another familiar opponent for Super Bowl 59: Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs and Eagles last met in Super Bowl 57, a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair that saw Mahomes earn his second Super Bowl ring. It was one of the most exciting games in recent memory, though it left a sour taste in the mouths of Eagles fans: as if the game was just a little bit longer, it felt like Hurts and Mahomes could go toe-to-toe all night.
Now, two seasons later, the same two teams will match up again. It’s still Patrick Mahomes vs. Jalen Hurts, and Andy Reid vs. Nick Sirianni. But there are new players on both teams as well, highlighted by former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who has been a difference maker and MVP for Philadelphia, in the midst of a historically great rushing season.
The Chiefs and Eagles both defended home turf to get back to the Super Bowl, beating the Bills and Commanders respectively in the Conference Championship round.
Kansas City will look to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three straight championships: a “three-peat.” The accomplishment, which would give Mahomes and Reid four championships as a duo, would propel all-time great talks for both the quarterback and head coach.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, will look to play the familiar role of dynasty spoiler: just as they did to Tom Brady with a Nick Foles-led effort in Super Bowl 52.

The Chiefs open as 1.5-point favorites in a tight market. Kansas City has been absolutely elite this season: with a 15-2 regular season record (including a Week 18 loss with the starters sitting out) and a 2-0 postseason record. The Chiefs have been virtually undefeated in games they need to win for three straight seasons now.
But Kansas City hasn’t been as dominant as previous versions of themselves, or other Super Bowl-winning teams. The Chiefs are one-score game wizards, always surviving in the fourth quarter with Mahomes performing under pressure.
With that being said, the Eagles have flaws as well. Philadelphia went 14-3 during the regular season, but with losses to Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Washington: three teams that aren’t as consistent at winning as Kanas City. If Philadelphia’s gameplan falls apart, the Eagles may not be able to keep up with the Chiefs offense.
Conversely, if the Eagles get any combination of an early lead, a timely turnover, and the usual solid effort from Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia could potentially flip the script from Super Bowl 57.
In a sense, it feels like the Eagles game to lose: in both a good and bad way. The good way being, if Philadelphia plays their brand of football, there’s a reasonable chance they come out on top. The bad way being, one mistake might be all it takes to gift the game to Mahomes and the Chiefs.
I predict a very similar game to Super Bowl 57, just maybe a little lower scoring. Saquon Barkley will be a huge part of the game no matter what, but in scenarios where the Eagles win, Barkley likely breaks off a couple 40+ yard runs and finds the endzone at least once or twice (Barkley may be a solid pick for Super Bowl 59 MVP.)
But Reid, Mahomes, and the Chiefs have this down to a science. Unless Mahomes and company lay a dud on offense, or worse, turn the ball over a couple of times, it’s pretty easy to see a path to victory that results in Kansas City’s third straight championship.
Prediction: Chiefs win 29-24, Patrick Mahomes win Super Bowl 59 MVP, Saquon Barkley rushes for 150+ yards and a score in a losing effort.
Who wins Super Bowl 59? Who needs it more? Are you tired of seeing Mahomes and the Chiefs every year in February, or are you excited to see a rematch of one of the most thrilling Super Bowls ever?
