After adding a former number one overall pick at the last minute, the Colorado Rockies have tweaked and finalized their 2025 Opening Day Roster.

The Rockies signed Mickey Moniak, the number one overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Moniak spent the last two and a half seasons with the Los Angeles Angels before being cut after Spring Training this year. Moniak fills in as a depth outfielder who can play all three positions, particularly center field.

Prior to that signing, the Rockies traded left fielder Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians for center fielder Tyler Freeman.

Zach Veen, also an outfielder and one of the organization’s top prospects, will start the season with the Triple-A Albuquerqe Isotopes.

The Rockies begin their regular season play on March 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays, at George M. Steinbrenner Field at 4:10PM ET/2:10PM MT. The Rays’ normal stomping grounds, Tropicana Field, was badly damaged in a hurricane last year, forcing Tampa Bay to play in the New York Yankees’ Spring Training facility.

Kyle Freeland will serve as the team’s Opening Day pitcher for the fourth time, extending his franchise record for earning the nod. Freeland is 1-2 in his previous three Opening Day starts, losing his last two in 2022 and 2024 to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively.
