The Washington Commanders are trading starting running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, just two weeks ahead of the start of the 2025-26 NFL regular season.
Robinson Jr. has been dependable for the Commanders, finishing just under 800 rushing yards per season and contributing to the offense as the lead ball carrier. In 2024, Robinson Jr. was limited to 13 games, but still finished with a career-high eight rushing touchdowns in addition to a career-high 4.3 yards per carry.
In 2023, Robinson Jr, posted career-highs as a pass-catcher: 36 catches for 368 yards and four receiving touchdowns.
With veteran Austin Ekeler and emerging rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt on the roster, Washington found Robinson Jr. to be expendable as rosters will be cut down in the coming days.
From the 49ers perspective, Robinson Jr. fills the hole left by the departure of running back Jordan Mason, and then some. As a #2 option, Robinson Jr. will be among the best in the league at his position. And with starting running back Christian McCaffrey coming off an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign, insurance at the position is a must.
