Yesterday was a huge day in the world of Colorado sports, mostly for the shocking news that came out in the late morning: the Denver Nuggets, less than two years removed from their first-ever NBA Championship, fired both head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth.
Throw in a Colorado Avalanche shootout victory, Colorado Rockies’ prospect Zach Veen making his MLB debut, and the Denver Broncos making a depth signing, there’s plenty to dive in to: let’s go ahead.
The Denver Nuggets didn’t play yesterday, but made easily the biggest splash of any Colorado team on Tuesday: firing both head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth.
The Nuggets play their first game tonight under interim head coach David Adelman, on the road against the Sacramento Kings.
With just three games left in the regular season, the Nuggets realistically need at least two wins to secure themselves a top four seed and home court advantage in at least the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
At time of writing, the Nuggets have officially slipped to the fifth seed in the Western Conference, potentially losing homecourt advantage in the first round for the first time in years. The Nuggets hold the same 47-32 record as the Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, and Memphis Grizzlies, and are only a game behind the Los Angeles Lakers and a game ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Western Conference standings will shuffle a few more times between now and Sunday evening, so it’s anyone’s guess where the Nuggets will stand at the regular season’s conclusion: hosting or even travelling for a Play-In Tournament game still remains a sobering possibility for Nikola Jokic and company.

The Colorado Avalanche are virtually locked in to a first round matchup with the Dallas Stars, but secured a sweet shootout victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights at Ball Arena on Tuesday to cap off a gritty game.
Valeri Nichushkin and Jimmy Vesey scored for the Avalanche in regulation, with Colorado overcoming a 2-0 deficit with two goals in the second period.
In the shootout portion of the evening, neither team could find the back of the net until the final frame: with Avalanche center Charlie Coyle netting the game-winning shootout goal.
The win all but solidifies the Avalanche’s playoff seeding with three games left in the regular season. Colorado sits firmly in third place in the Central Division: six points behind the current Stanley Cup favorite (per FanDuel) Dallas Stars, and seven points ahead of the St. Louis Blues.
This sets the stage for an epic Avalanche-Stars first round playoff series. Dallas ousted the Avalanche in six games last year in the second round of playoffs, and now employs a former Avalanche fan favorite: Mikko Rantanen.
Barely a week after starting the season in Triple-A Albuquerque, top prospect and outfielder Zach Veen was called up to the majors for the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Veen made the start in right field and batted seventh for his MLB debut, going 1-for-4 with his first MLB hit on an infield bunt single in the seventh inning.
But in the top half of the seventh inning, the Milwaukee Brewers had hit solo three home runs: from Brice Turang, Christian Yelich, and William Contreras, to turn their 4-1 lead in to a commanding 7-1 lead, which was also the final score of the game at Coors Field.
The Rockies fall to 2-8 on the season and 1-3 at Coors Field. Colorado plays again tonight Milwaukee before rounding out the series with a day game tomorrow.
The Denver Broncos signed former Carolina Panthers safety Sam Franklin to a one-year deal, in a move that creates depth in the secondary ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Franklin is a special teams ace, recording a team-high 13 tackles on special teams in 2022.
The Colorado Rapids lost 2-0 to the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps last Saturday. This marks the second time in three games that Colorado has gone scoreless.
The Rapids will face San Deigo FC this Saturday, April 12, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. San Deigo FC is tied for second in the Western Conference with 4 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss, good for 14 points. Colorado isn’t too far behind in the season’s early going, tied for fifth in the West with 3 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses, good for 11 points.
