The New York Jets decided to pull the plug on their two-year Aaron Rodgers experiment earlier this month, which was really just one season after Rodgers missed nearly the entire 2023-24 season. Statistically, Rodgers wasn’t horrible in his 17 starts in 2024-25: tossing 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, and throwing for 3,897 yards. But the Jets-Rodgers tandem simply didn’t result in wins, with the Jets finishing 5-12 and not even sniffing playoff contention last season.
So, the 41-year old, former NFL MVP quarterback hits the open market. While it’s possible Rodgers calls it a career and retires (something he’s already considered before), there is a buzz around the league that landing spots for Rodgers exist and Rodgers still has the urge to play.
Rodgers could and should go down as one of the best quarterbacks of all-time, but his resume glaringly only has one Super Bowl appearance, which pales in comparison to his peers (Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, even Jalen Hurts.) Rodgers isn’t washed quite yet, and could realistically get one last Super Bowl ring on his way out: just like Brady and P. Manning did. And just like those two quarterbacks, Rodgers would do so by team-hopping at the end of his career.
But how many teams offer both a Super Bowl-worthy roster and an open quarterback position? Very few, unless a team uprooted it’s current quarterback or plan for Rodgers, which may be risky at this stage in his career. Nevertheless, there are some teams that fit the mold I just described, as well as a couple of other teams that may offer Rodgers a starting position if that’s what he wants, but maybe without the prospect of a Super Bowl this season.
Without further ado, here are Six Landing Spots for Aaron Rodgers in 2025-26. If you’d like to debate or discuss any spots, join the conversation with @SakSports on X/Twitter or Facebook.
The Tennessee Titans are currently among the betting favorites to land Aaron Rodgers, tied for the fourth-best odds on DraftKings. From a pure football standpoint, this marriage wouldn’t really make a ton of sense. Barring an unforeseen turn of events, the Titans likely won’t be playoff-bound in 2025. If Rodgers goes to Tennessee, it’s probably because no other teams made a strong offer and because Rodgers isn’t ready to hang up his cleats quite yet.
With the first overall pick at their disposal, signing Rodgers before the 2025 NFL Draft could be a chess move of sorts. Tennessee could retain the first overall pick, and select a non-quarterback, such as Colorado Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. The Titans could also still select a quarterback (either Miami QB Cam Ward or Colorado QB Shadeur Sanders) and have that quarterback sit behind Rodgers for a year. The Titans could also trade down, maybe still nab a quarterback in the first round, and have options in 2025.
But again, football-wise, going from the New York Jets to the Tennessee Titans would see Aaron Rodgers have even less roster support in the twilight of his career: probably not what he’s looking for.
The Las Vegas Raiders are primed to make a big move at quarterback this off season, whether it’s through the 2025 NFL Draft or free agency. For the Raiders, it doesn’t have to be Super Bowl or bust, but the Tom Brady-infused ownership group needs to just start winning some games. Aaron Rodgers could provide a stopgap at the quarterback position, allowing a roster that’s talented in other positions to start shining more.
Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be the first player to jump from one New York (okay, New Jersey) franchise to the next, but don’t rule out the New York Giants as a landing spot for the veteran quarterback. New York is absolutely desperate at the quarterback position after unceremoniously releasing Daniel Jones last season. Tommy DeVito isn’t cutting it as an NFL quarterback, The Giants will likely need to add at least two passers to their roster this off season to make up for this deficit.
The Giants will likely go for a quarterback if the right one is available with the third overall pick, but if New York doesn’t love Shadeur Sanders, there’s not a lot of sensible options for the Giants’ Week 1 starting quarterback. In order to avoid being a laughing stock on the field yet again, the Giants could use Rodgers’ steady presence to elevate the team’s stature, and hopefully win a couple more games than they usually do.
And in a two-quarterback scenario, once again, Rodgers could be the Week 1 starter while the rookie quarterback catches up to speed: maybe this year, maybe next year.
The Los Angeles Rams are heating up as the current betting favorites to sign Aaron Rodgers this off season, amidst talks of the team parting ways with incumbent quarterback Matthew Stafford’s hefty contract. The Rams could pivot to Rodgers at quarterback, possibly a downgrade but not necessarily a huge one, as Los Angeles looks to build on last year’s playoff appearance. Such a pairing would likely be with “win-now” aspirations for both teams, more so than almost any other team on this list.
Much like the Los Angeles Rams, the Pittsburgh Steelers could be in the market to dump one veteran quarterback for another this off season. For Russell Wilson, it’s less about his contract (the Denver Broncos are still taking care of that), and more about a pure upgrade at the position. While Wilson played better in Pittsburgh than he did in Denver, if I’m building a football team in 2025 and my options are Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers, I’m going with Rodgers. The Steelers could kick the tires on this idea, but also still have Justin Fields on the roster, who I would also take over Russell Wilson in 2025.
The ultimate meme scenario: Aaron Rodgers completes his Brett Favre-career arc, going from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets to the Minnesota Vikings.
But it’s not just a joke, as it actually makes sense from a football standpoint. The Vikings were a really good team last season despite a disappointing finish, and have the roster to win now. With Sam Darnold’s future in flux, and J.J. McCarthy still yet to take an NFL snap, the Vikings could commit to win-now mode with a veteran Rodgers at quarterback.
It nearly worked in 2009 with Favre: and Favre was battling Father Time much more harshly than Rodgers is right now. The Vikings could realistically win 12 or 13 games with Rodgers, and then potentially make some noise in the playoffs. This scenario would leave a particularly sour taste in the mouths of Packers fans, seeing their once franchise hero now playing for one of their fiercest rivals… again.
Aaron Rodgers could help us begin to answer the Brock Purdy question: was Purdy actually a diamond in the rough, or just a beneficiary of an elite San Franciso 49ers roster and system?
Even at his advanced age, there’s some throws Rodgers can make that would add new wrinkles to San Francisco’s already dynamic offense. It would be a homecoming of sorts as well, returning to the state of California where Rodgers played his college ball.
While last season was disappointing, the 49ers hope a healthy roster could get them right back to Super Bowl contention. Could Rodgers be the one the calling the shots for San Francisco deep in the playoffs, putting a cherry on the top of his career?
