The Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets 23-20 at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football to improve to 4-2, while dropping the Jets to 2-4. The Jets, needing to be all-in this season with a veteran Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, so this loss may have prompted management to pull the trigger: New York acquired wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders to spruce up their offense even further, giving Rodgers an arsenal of tools at his disposal.
But the Bills, sitting alone at first place in the AFC East, didn’t just stand idly by. Instead, Buffalo stunned the league by upgrading their own wide receiving corps, which may have still been needed despite the 4-2 start after the departure of Stefon Diggs in the off-season.
Buffalo is acquiring wide receiver Amari Cooper from a 1-5 Cleveland Browns team that looks ready to hit the reset button on the Deshaun Watson experiment. The five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver becomes Josh Allen’s newest weapon, and gives the Bills more options at the position, whether or not Cooper emerges as Allen’s top target or not.
The Bills have been routinely good-to-great during their Josh Allen era, but have still yet to break through to a Super Bowl. This in-season trade shows that Buffalo is staying aggressive in their efforts to bring home their first ever Lombardi Trophy.
Buffalo and Cleveland swap late-round picks in a trade that essentially boils down to Amari Cooper for a third-round pick: on paper, a similar value to what the Jets had to pay for Davante Adams.
The AFC East has turned in to an arms race: which wide receiver will help their new team more? How has the complexion of AFC East changed, or is it a net neutral with the Bills matching the Jets move?
