Rappers and recording artists Drake and 21 Savage were set to bring their “It’s All a Blur Tour” to Denver, Colorado, following the joint release of Her Loss in late 2022 from the two highly successful artists.
After Denver missed the cut when the tour was initially announced, a September 8 show at Ball Arena was added in April, giving Colorado a taste of Drake since 2016, when he appeared with Future at the then-Pepsi Center for their Summer Sixteen tour. Drake was set to appear at Pepsi Center in 2018 with Migos, but that show was postponed and later cancelled.
Hopefully, history doesn’t repeat itself. Drake and 21 Savage have been forced to postpone their September 8 show at Ball Arena, with tour management calling it “logistically impossible” to bring the tour to Colorado at this time, citing travel concerns and “the magnitude of the production of the Drake concert,” which could refer to the tons of equipment that would need to be hauled in to the arena. Ticketholders were informed on Monday, ahead of the Friday concert, and are encouraged to hold on to their ticket rights until a make-up date is announced.
Postponing shows happens. Playboi Carti was also set to perform at Ball Arena this week, on September 6, but moved his entire North American leg of the tour back, potentially in conjunction with the release of new music. While Carti’s “Antagonist” tour was also cut on extremely short notice, at least it was fair across the board.
The question is: what makes coming to Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado “logistically impossible?” Drake’s tour management selected the venue, the dates, and the amount of travel time they would have leading in to the concert months ago. Was it just poor planning, and oversights started piling up? Was there something major the tour didn’t account for? Sorry, but for an artist of Drake’s caliber, I have a hard time believing the decision makers involved (who just want to make sure everyone makes money) were blindsided by last-minute logistical concerns. I’m not sure what the alternative is, but incompetence at this scale just seems unlikely.
So will Drake and 21 Savage still grace the Ball Arena stage at some point? As one Twitter user said: “Don’t hold your breathe.” Unfortunately with Drake’s history in the city, it’s certainly possible that this postponement becomes a cancellation. But hey, I was surprised when A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, who literally attempted to have an opening night for his 2023 tour in Denver but had to postpone due to fan rowdiness, came back to Colorado for not one, but two shows. So there’s certainly some hope that Drake returns to the Mile High City for the first time in seven years. Only time will tell.
